Breathing is so natural that we do it without thinking about it: while we sleep, work or eat. However, most people do not breathe properly, and doing it wrong can cause major problems in the body.

When we breathe incorrectly we don’t notice it instantly, but over time signs appear: more fatigue, poorer sleep quality, difficulty concentrating or higher anxiety levels. That is why learning to breathe consciously is so important for our health.

What does it mean to breathe wrong?

Most people breathe through the mouth, quickly, shallowly or using only the chest. This pattern, called dysfunctional breathing, can trigger stress even in calm moments. It also causes excessive loss of carbon dioxide (CO₂), a key element for oxygen to efficiently reach the cells. Without sufficient CO₂, the body and brain do not function at 100%, causing fatigue and mental fogginess.

Functional breathing and its benefits

Experts such as Konstantin Buteyko, Patrick McKeown and James Nestor have shown that breathing through the nose, slowly and gently, helps maintain health. The nose filters, warms and humidifies the air before it reaches the lungs. It also produces nitric oxide, a gas that improves gas exchange and helps the respiratory system function.

Patrick McKeown has proven that correct breathing can improve problems such as asthma, sleep and concentration. James Nestor, in his book Breathe, explains how modern habits have deteriorated our way of breathing over the last two centuries and how regaining optimal breathing can reduce snoring, back pain, stress, and even help prevent premature aging.

Connection with the vagus nerve

Breathing through the nose also activates the vagus nerve, the longest nerve in our body, connected to a large part of our organs and emotions. This nerve acts as a “calm button”: a slow, deep breath sends signals to the body that all is well, promoting relaxation and working as a preventive medicine to avoid illnesses in the future.

In short: use your nasal breathing as a daily tool to reduce stress, improve sleep, increase concentration and take care of your health. Breathing well is free, and it can change your life.
